Parent Collapses During Admission of Daughter Over 17K School Fees Demand

A parent on Wednesday collapsed from shock while admitting his daughter to form one at Kingwede Girls Secondary School in Kwale County.

Ndaikwa Chale from Kinango sub-county was reportedly shocked after he was informed that he was required to pay for school fees.

According to his daughter, Fatuma Chale, her father was left with only Sh800 after doing all the school shopping.

“We shopped for school materials before we arrived at school in the evening but when my father was told about the fees he collapsed and started vomiting, said the girl.

The 16-Year-Old girl, who scored 319 marks out of 500, said that both her parents sell charcoal and cannot afford to pay Sh16,993 which is required for school fees.

Confirming the incident, school principal, Mrs Peninah Mwinyi, said the two arrived in the evening looking exhausted.

“A parent arrived accompanied by his daughter and proceeded for admission but when he was asked to pay the school fees, he fainted,â€ said the school’s head.

She suspected that the failure by the parent to raise school fees for his daughter could have affected him psychologically.

“We rushed him to Msambweni County Referral Hospital as we got in touch with his relatives, she said.

Students joining Form One started reporting on Monday as the government rolls out the free day secondary education.

All the students reporting to boarding and day secondary schools have a Friday deadline to have reported, according to acting Education Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i who visited Kenya High, Ngara Girls and Jamhuri High schools to oversee the progress of student admission.
